Women’s Cycling is making leaps and bounds, both professionally and locally. Women get their own day at Le Tour de France this year. Locally, our own Women’s Clinic has enjoyed huge success in its first two years, even selling out last year.
Women’s cycling is growing and one of our favorite bicycle manufacturers recognizes that. Specialized found that women are the fastest growing segment in cycling and is working to please those women cyclists. Following 2013’s celebration of 10 years of women’s cycling – and the revamp of the Ruby – Specialized is continuing their efforts to have women designing for women.
In 2013, when Specialized redid the Ruby, they gave her more than a cosmetic facelift; she got a total reboot. Now we’d like to introduce you to the 2014 Specialized Ruby Comp.
2014 Specialized Ruby Comp Ultegra
Nothing makes this bike happier than going long. With its FACT carbon frame—built with endurance in mind—the Ruby delivers confident handling and a comfortable, fatigue-free ride, making it the perfect choice for Gran Fondos, training rides, or weekend adventures out of town and into the hills. Climbing, going fast, or going long, the Ruby responds in a way that inspires confidence, and with her refined aesthetics, she looks good doing it.
Just like the Specialized Roubaix, the her male counterpart, the Ruby was designed as a pure-bred endurance bike that will help you ride long, confidently and comfortably.
The Ruby Comp is a quick and efficient, FACT carbon bike, with Zertz vibration dampers in the frame and fork. She’s designed to cover long distances in maximum control and comfort. High-quality Shimano Ultegra 11-speed compact drivetrain and Fulcrum S5 wheelset keep weight down and performance up.
- Incredibly smooth, fatigue-free ride with FACT carbon frame, featuring OSBB and Zertz.
- Ultra-light FACT full carbon monocoque fork with vibration-damping Zertz is stiff, responsive, and durable.
- Fulcrum S5 wheels are fast, light, and durable for high-mileage riding.
- FSA Gossamer Pro crankset paired with Shimano Ultegra shifters and derailleurs keeps shifting smooth and accurate.
- Body Geometry Lithia Comp Gel saddle features generous padding and hollow Cr-Mo rails for all-day comfort and durability.
The Specialized Ruby falls into the category of “endurance road bike” or “comfort road bike.” Perhaps that sounds like an oxymoron. When we talk about road bikes, we think about speed, not comfort. But for a woman who is setting out for a day race over cobblestones or who is putting in long hours in the saddle to train for a century, comfort comes from the not-so-small details.
Endurance road bike frames tend to be vertically tighter while featuring a headset that is higher than in a traditional road racing bike. This allows for a more comfortable, yet still efficient position. Endurance road bikes utilize frame materials, like specially designed carbon layup and Specialized Zertz inserts, that dampen road “noise” or vibration. The frame design also helps to dampen vibration before it can reach the body – most notably at the seatstays and chainstays, where it leads to the rider’s seat, and at the fork, which leads directly to the rider’s hands.
Specialized maximized these “comfort” features in the Ruby – from the FACT carbon construction to the strategically placed Zertz inserts, from the dog-legged seatstays to the lighter fork. As Boonen’s repeated success at the Paris-Roubaix proves, increased comfort on a road bike means more efficient cycling and that translates into faster speeds.
