Father’s Day Gift Guide

To make your Father’s Day shopping easier, our Higher Gear team has put together some of our favorite picks for the active dad.

For Any Dad Who Spends Hours in the Saddle

Whether dad’s a pro or he just thinks he is, he wants to get the most out of his time cycling.

Bike Fit

Treat dad to the gift that keeps on giving: hours of pain-free riding after a professional Bike Fit done on the Calfee Fit Cycle. For serious racers as well as those who may not be so serious but who want to get the most efficiency out of their two wheels and who want to experience the fewest amount of aches and pains during and after their time in the saddle.

For the Dad Who Wants to Keep Up – with Current Trends & with the Group!

Two quick upgrades that can translate into faster speeds on the bike are a helmet and wheels. So for someone who has recently bought a new bike or someone who is looking to make changes to a current bike, a new wheelset is an ideal gift. Since Helmets should be replaced every 3-5 years, they always make a nice gift.

Mavic Ksyrium
Going from a basic set of wheels, the Mavic Ksyriums are a nice upgrade. While being durable, these wheels are also lightweight and stiff, two features that make for faster speeds. Check out the review in Competitive Cyclist.

Mavic Cosmic Carbons
For some, the CC’s are the Holy Grail of wheels. This aero wheelset is light and stiff. What sets this one apart isĀ long time proven Mavic aerodynamics, including elliptical sidewalls and low count aero spokes.

Not sure which wheels he’ll like? Give dad a pass to test out a set of wheels on Saturday, June 9th when the Mavic Demo Truck will be at Higher Gear Wilmette. Dad can try out a pair of wheels on his own bike and test-ride them during our group ride on Sheridan Road.

Uvex FP 3 Helmet
High-end helmets offer the same protection as other helmets. The difference (aside from looking cooler) is increased aerodynamics, air ventilation, fit and comfort while being lighter in weight. The Uvex FP 3‘s futuristic design and slender shape make it a perfect choice for the sporty dad.

For the Techy Dad

Dads like toys too. Dads just like nicer toys.

Garmin Edge 800
This is not your average toy, nor is it your average cycling computer. The Garmin Edge 800 is a full-featured mapping computer with performance monitoring. It provides everything you want to know on your ride and more in a sleek, lightweight and aerodynamic package. It even gives dad a Virtual Training PartnerĀ® for days he needs a little motivation.

For the Dad with Style

You may think spandex looks goofy but there are those who don theirs with pride, like dad. Believe it or not, there are “rules” and “dress codes” for cyclists (just ask the Velominati or our Higher Gear staff). You don’t want dad getting teased for having a jersey that doesn’t match his shorts, do you?

Higher Gear’s 2012 Kit
The Higher Gear 2012 Kits are in! Another exclusive Todd Design and a perfect gift for Father’s Day! Dad can sport Higher Gear’s colors and the Chicago skyline while riding in comfortable 4-way stretch fabric and SafetyCol’s endurance chamois. Dad will be stylish on his short rides AND comfortable on his centuries.

While the kit (bibs + jersey or shorts + jersey) makes a nice gift, the Higher Gear 2012 Team Jersey alone is quite spiffy. (It can be paired with black bibs or shorts, so dad won’t get teased.)

Transition lenses like Rudy Project's ImpactX Photochromic Lenses make adjustments so you don't have to.

Rudy Project Sunglasses
Cycling glasses don’t just protect dad’s eyes from sunlight. They also keep dad’s eyes safe from objects in the road and in the air. Impact-resistant lenses provide protection in the event of a crash. All those safety features from a cool-looking pair of shades! Higher Gear recommends Rudy Project sunglasses with photochromatic lenses, so dad can go from bright lights to shade while looking chic.

For the Commuter Dad:

For those days dad commutes to work on his bike, you want him to be safe. Part of safety on the bike is being able to see and being seen.

The Vis360 is the ideal commuter light. 360 degrees of visibility!

Light & Motion Vis 360
For the dad who commutes, the Vis 360 is a way to keep him seeing and seen in those early morning hours and in the evening. The Vis 360 is an all-in-one headlight and taillight, complete with amber side lights – delivering a full 360 degrees of visibility. Weighing in at only 130g, the headlight puts out 110 lumens and the rear, 4 lumens. Only 4.5 hours in the USB charger will create a full charge, allowing for 2.5 to 15 hours of use.

Still not sure what to get dad? A Higher Gear Gift Certificate is sure to please! We suggest a Gift Certificate in the amount of our Standard Tune-Up because dad is sure to need a Tune-Up soon!
