Training at Higher Gear

If you have plans for 2014 to race, ride an early season century or just step up your cycling, a CompuTrainer Studio is a good place to start your season off right. If you are looking to stay in shape over the winter or maybe even shed a few pounds, the CompuTrainer offers a no-impact workout in a fun environment.

Unlike spinning, you are putting the miles in on your own bike. You’re also getting real-time feedback on your wattage, cadence (with optional cadence monitor) and heart rate (if you have a Polar heart rate monitor) to assess and improve overall cycling efficiency.

Our boutique studio has space for up to 8 cyclists to ride simultaneously. We have a wide selection of courses and videos available – including the Sufferfest series and many IronMan courses.

While riders share a course or a workout, each person rides to his/her ability, based on his/her respective power output (FTP or Functional Threshold Power). Once a month, at the beginning of each month, we will test and retest to determine each person’s FTP so that riders are challenged and can progress all season.

CompuTrainer Studio Information and Guidelines:

  • Studio is first-come-first-served. Call 847-433-2453 to reserve your space.
  • IF YOU PLAN TO DO A MORNING CLASS, RESERVE YOUR SPACE AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING THE EVENING PRIOR. If no one is scheduled 30 minutes prior to closing on the evening before classes that run before normal shop hours (10:00am M-F, 9:00am Sat & noon Sun), the studio will not open.
  • Please make sure your bike is free of mud, snow and salt.
  • You will need a trainer skewer for your rear wheel. If you don’t have one, you can purchase one at Higher Gear.
  • Bring a towel, water bottle and nutrition for your workout.
  • You must cancel a minimum of an hour before session time to avoid being charged for session. There will be no reimbursement for missed classes.
  • Each month, the first week of the month, riders will do an FTP (Functional Threshold Power) assessment which will be used to determine power numbers.
  • Bike storage includes storage of your bicycle only. It does not include storage of shoes or other gear.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time for setup, calibration and warm-up.
  • It’s your responsibility to set up and remove your own bike.
  • Wipe down your area after working out.
  • Rides start PROMPTLY at the scheduled start time, so if you arrive late, ride in “ERG” (non-recorded) mode.
  • Do not leave your bike behind unless you have signed up for monthly storage.
  • Do not leave your shoes, nutrition or other gear behind. Items left behind will be put in lost and found at the end of the day. After seven (7) days, lost and found items will be donated or disposed.

If you have a group of four or more who would like to ride as a group, we will help you build a program based off of the courses we have available.
