Tune-ups & Overhauls

Tune-up Packages

How do you know which Higher Gear Tune-up is right for you? Are Race Checks only for racers? Is the Deluxe Tune-up the best because it’s the most thorough option?

Let’s start with the basics. A tune-up allows a professional bike mechanic the opportunity to ensure your bicycle is in a safe and reliable condition to ride. How frequently you need a tune-up depends on how often you ride, how you ride and in what conditions you ride. A fair-weather occasional rider may only need a Standard Tune-up once every spring to get his bike road-worthy for the season. A commuter who rides through all kinds of road conditions will need her bike cleaned and tuned-up more frequently. A triathlete will want to have an inspection prior to any races in addition to having regularly scheduled tune-ups.

Despite the name, a Race Check is not just for racers. A race check is for anyone who wants a thorough inspection of their bike. It’s an especially common option for someone who washes their bike and lubricates the chain and moving parts regularly, keeping the drive-train free from gunk that can build up. It’s a way for our trained mechanics to get a look at your bike and make sure it is safe to ride.

A Deluxe Tune-up is recommended when your bottom bracket needs to be overhauled. Not sure if you need an overhaul? Our mechanics are happy to take a look at your bike and discuss this with you.

Our most popular option is the Standard Tune-up. Most riders will have a Standard Tune-up at the beginning of their riding season. Depending on how frequently they ride and in what conditions they ride, they may choose to have one or two more tune-ups during the year, especially prior to an event or race. The Standard Tune-up gives our mechanics the opportunity to remove moving parts, clean them, re-lubricate them and get them back to original working condition. While your bike is in the stand, our mechanics also have the opportunity to determine whether it’s time to replace parts – like your chain, cables, brake pads, cassette and tires.*

One of the unmentioned benefits of a tune-up is just this: having a trained eye on a piece of equipment you trust to get you and your loved ones from point A to point B. There’s a peace of mind that comes with that. Regular tune-ups can also help your bicycle last for generations.

Still unsure which Tune-up package is right for you? Bring your bike into Higher Gear. Our mechanic will look it over and give you a recommendation based on the condition of your bike.

* There will be an additional charge for any parts on all tune-ups.

If you have parts to swap out, lights to add, a rack to install on the back, our mechanics can help.
