We Hit It Out of the Park

We hit it out of the park on Sunday, July 19th for our second annual Gran Fondo Hundo!

Not only did we have a great event, but our Hundo participants also helped World Bicycle Relief’s efforts to mobilize people through The Power of Bicycles.

World Bicycle Relief (WBR) accomplishes its mission by designing, manufacturing and distributing high quality bicycles that withstand the challenging terrain and conditions in rural Africa. The Buffalo Bike makes a direct impact on the lives of entrepreneurs, students, health care workers, their families and the people and communities where they live and work.

World Bicycle Relief is currently expanding its Bicycles for Educational Empowerment Program to Kenya. They are working to provide bicycles to students (70% girls), teachers and educational workers in rural Kenya. $147 provides a Buffalo Bicycle to a student in need.

Our second annual Gran Fondo Hundo participants collectively raised a grand total of $42,917, enough for 291 WBR Buffalo Bikes. The money raised from this year’s Gran Fondo Hundo is helping to support this bold, expansion effort and will support an entire school in Kenya.

Meet our top fundraisers for the second annual Gran Fondo Hundo:

1. John McCormick, who raised $16,663 and is the winner of the dream bike. McCormick is a familiar face on our Saturday Morning Group Rides. For 2015, he’s decided to test his mettle in road racing. This was McCormick’s first big effort to fundraise for WBR and McCormick really stepped up to the plate big time.

2. Team Higney is made up of four hard-working members who put in the miles together. Andrew is the patriarch of the Higney family. Garrett was the WFRT top fundraiser for 2011 and 2012. Caroline, followed in her brother’s footsteps and was the WFRT top fundraiser for 2013. Then Corrine rode her first 60k with us on July 12th. Team Higney raised $11,501 for the Gran Fondo Hundo. This, in addition to their three years of WFRT fund-raising, means that the Garretts have raised an astounding $72,114 for WBR.

3. Tom Renaud, whose $8,242 raised for the Gran Fondo Hundo is only a portion of what he hopes to accomplish. Heading into 2015, together Tom and his wife, Ruth-Anne, have raised over $47,000 to provide 350 Buffalo Bikes. For 2015, Tom has set his sites on “Riding with a Purpose.” He has committed to doing 4,000 actual road miles – and – five 100-mile century rides. Throughout his training, he is asking friends to help him raise $14,700, or enough to provide 100 Buffalo Bikes.
