Another Hundo “W”

Many believe that Moses parted the Red Sea. Some credit freak weather conditions for exposing the sea floor. Whatever the cause, we’re calling the relief from rain and flooding on July 23rd – the day of our 4th annual Gran Fondo Hundo – nothing short of a miracle. Because conditions were perfect. (Perhaps they got a bit hot and humid, but we were grateful to wake up Sunday morning and learn that our Hundo participants could travel by two wheels, instead of on an ark!)

The day started out as most event days do. Excitement and anticipation were the dominating emotions, as our participants loaded up their vehicles to head to the ride’s starting point: the Higher Gear parking lot.

Some, however, decided to forgo the four-wheeled transportation to the start line of the ride. Two Gearheads, Ed Brill and John McCormick, decided it would be more fun to do a full century ride of 100 miles. For those two, the day began on two wheels and a 35-mile ride just to the start line of our ride.

At the shop, excitement was high as our Saturday Morning Group Ride regulars introduced themselves to first time Hundo riders, like Robin and Brian Pomeroy, who came down from Wisconsin to ride back up north with us. After breaking her collarbone in a cycling accident in May, Robin was cleared (with restrictions) for riding outdoors again on July 18th. On July 19th, the Pomeroys promptly registered for the Gran Fondo Hundo to celebrate the good news and to ride for World Bicycle Relief.

So many of our first time participants rode with us in support of World Bicycle Relief. Bill and Sheila Best – big supporters of WBR – joined us. Will Geiger – who shares the same athletic genes and the same passion for WBR as his sister, Claire – was with us. Also riding with us were WBR co-founder Leah Day and Dave Neiswander, recently promoted from Head of Africa Operations to President of WBR.

Also joining us this year, were Ed Dixon and Dian┬áSourelis from the Major Taylor Cycling Club of Chicago (MTC3). Never heard of Major Taylor? From 1898 to 1904, he was the fastest cyclist in the world. In 1899 he set seven world records. Beyond breaking speed barriers, Taylor was breaking social barriers. At a time when a black man was “lucky” enough to be entered in to a competition with whites, his ability to win against them challenged their perceived superiority. Taking inspiration from the first African American World Cycling Champion, today the Major Taylor Cycling Club of Chicago promotes health by supporting recreational and social cycling activities in the community. Membership is open to all, regardless of race, creed or skill level.

After all our riders were checked in, our cyclists and our Organized Chaos motorcycle escorts headed north. The weather was perfect at the start and spirits were high. Those “Group 1” riders set out at a blazing pace to be out of the showers with beer in hand before anyone else started showing up to the game. (Also, so Pepe could make it back south in time to dominate another race in the Intelligentsia Cup. More on that next week.) Most everyone else set out to make the most of the day, knowing that the rest stops would be well stocked, regardless of the time of their arrival.

In a metric century, the first rest stop is a luxury; the second is a necessity. Riders rush through Rest Stop #1. They chat. They have fun snapping photos with friends and fluffy elephants.

But Rest Stop #2 is there in case of emergency. And Sunday required emergency relief. The wind direction had changed for that second leg of the ride and temperatures went up. Let’s just say that it was a tad bit hot and humid for our riders. (Imagine how our poor elephant must have felt!)

Our Hundo riders took advantage of the savory snacks to replenish salt and the fruit to replenish water and carbs. And, once again, the iced towels provided relief to all. (Some needed a little coaxing, but once they gave in, they relished the icy towel on their neck.)

The iced towels did the trick. It helped that some clouds rolled in and that the wind changed direction again, providing a little push into Kenosha. Sights set on Simmons Field, our cyclists headed in, group by group.

Group one arrived early enough to unlock the stadium doors for the baseball players who arrived to warm up. (Seriously guys, we already know you’re fast!) Ed insisted on turning around to get in that last mile (that he “kneeded”) to round up to 100 for the day. The last rider rolled in about an hour and a half later. Everyone accounted for, it was time for a baseball game!

Year #4 of our Gran Fondo Hundo was another success, but it was only a success because of each and every one who participated. Thank you to all the riders/fundraisers, WBR donors, motorcycle escorts, volunteers and organizers who made the ride possible and our efforts to support The Power of Bicycles greater.

Our fundraising deadline is Monday, July 31st at 11:59pm. There’s still time to earn more entries into the raffle, dream big for the Dream Bike and to take advantage of dollar-for-dollar donation matching to WBR this month.

Don’t stop! There’s still time to fundraise – and increase your chances of winning great raffle prizes >>
