August 2016 Races, Rides and Events

Summer in the Midwest doesn’t last long. Soak up all the cycling action that August has to offer. If you’ve be anxious about jumping into a crowded criterium race or if soloing appeals to you, there are lots of great time trials to choose from this month. On the other end of the spectrum, if you’re looking for a social ride with a great group of people and you haven’t done so yet, it’s time to join our Saturday Morning Group Rides. We’d love to ride with you.

6 August: Brian Akers Memorial 19k Individual Time Trial
Harvard, IL
Part of the 2016 Mid-America Time Trial Series (MATTS), this time trial covers a 19k course over excellent roads.


6 – 8 August: CowaLUNGa
Gurnee, IL
Join hundreds of cyclists for CowaLUNGa’s 20th anniversary and continue the tradition of supporting lung health through advocacy, education and research! Escape the noise of the city for a weekend pedaling over rolling hills through northern Illinois into southern Wisconsin. Choose your challenge! Cyclists of all ages and abilities will ride anywhere from 18 miles to over 190 miles over one, two or three days. Along the way, you’ll meet new friends and experience an unparalleled level of camaraderie and support from other cyclists and the Respiratory Health Association.

7 August: Two Rivers Century
Kankakee, IL
An enjoyable one-day ride in Kankakee County along two scenic Illinois Rivers. In addition to the two rivers, riders will also see downtown Kankakee, Kankakee Community College, The Shapiro Clock Tower, barn quilts, two Frank Lloyd Wright homes, border town Momence and its “Island Park”, buffalo, Watseka, one of the largest and oldest wood frame churches in IL, corn, beans and more! Six distance options: 22, 47, 62, 80, 100 and 124 miles.

7 August: Two Rivers Road Race
St. Anne, IL
Two Rivers Road Race and ABR Illinois Championship held in Aroma Park in Kankakee County, Illinois. One lap is 18 miles, through rolling hills and flat roads of Kankakee County. Mostly paved roads. Some chip seal. Two railroad crossings and an uphill finish.

13 August: Dairyland Dare Grand Fondo Wisconsin
Dodgeville, WI
Set in southwest Wisconsin, the land untouched by glacial flattening, the Dairyland Dare Gran Fondo Wisconsin offers some of the most extreme hills in the Midwest. Pick from six chip timed one day challenges: 50K, 100K, 150K, 200K, 250K or 300K. Stage 3 of The Wisconsin Triple Crown – Endurance Cycling Series.

13 August: One Day Ride Across Michigan (ODAM)
Various cities, MI
The state of Michigan also offers a one day trip, departing from the western edge. The 145ish mile route typically presents riders with the most challenging portion while their legs are fresh. The first 80 miles takes riders over rolling hills and a gradual elevation climb. The roads are overwhelmingly rural and present minimal car traffic. Proceeds benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Ride to Cure Program.

13 August: MadCity Velo Kirke Vei 20k
Stoughton, WI

13 – 14 August (Saturday night-Sunday morning): Friends of the Parks’ L.A.T.E. Ride
Chicago, IL
Join up to 9,000 bicyclists for a 25-mile ride through Chicago’s neighborhoods and along the lakefront. Cycle past skyscrapers, hear shout of “Opaah!” in Greek Town, cruise through the North Side, wave to onlookers, and watch the sun rise over Lake Michigan. Plus, you’ll enjoy music before the ride, sponsor booths to explore, refreshments before the ride and at the rest stop, and great food and beverages after your trek through the city. “Chicago is a city of neighborhoods.” You’ll experience many exciting and distinctive neighborhoods during Friends of the Parks’ L.A.T.E. Ride!

14 August: Tri-State Tour #2
Hammond, IN to Kenosha, WI
Bicycle Illinois is excited to present the Tri-State Tour. With this tour, you’ll travel through three states in one day! The ride will begin just over the Illinois/Indiana border in Hammond, Indiana and finish in Kenosha, Wisconsin, traveling north along Lake Michigan through Illinois. The single day event covers approximately 85 miles and includes a century option as well. The Tri-State Tour #1 will occur on the Saturday immediately following Bicycle Illinois while the Tri-State Tour #2 will be held on a Sunday.


20 August: Bike Psychos Century XXXIII
Coal City, IL
Follow the historic I&M Canal Corridor over scenic country roads along the Illinois River. Choose from routes of 30, 50, 70, 100 or 124 miles. This ride features a great route, friendly staff, fabulous fresh food, awesome SAG drivers, bottled water and lots of fun. Showers are available and both massage therapy and insulated water bottles are available for a nominal fee. A classic ride with a bike club celebrating over 30 years.

20 August: Ride Like An Egyptian
DeKalb, IL
A fun and enjoyable bike ride through DeKalb and Kane Counties and support the historic Egyptian Theatre, a fully restored 1929 Egyptian-themed art deco movie palace and vaudeville house. This bike ride offers four mix-n-match 25-mile loops, with all routes utilizing a central rest stop that is indoors with air conditioning/heat and real restrooms. The end-of-ride meal has continually been ranked as one of the best offered for bike rides. The ride begins and ends at the Egyptian Theatre, so you will have the opportunity to explore this historic landmark. 


20 – 21 August: Illinois Timed Event State Championships
Northbrook, IL
More exciting track action at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook.


21 August: Double Bong 40 km TT
Kansasville, WI
Don’t miss this 40k at the Richard Bong Recreation Area, sponsored by ABR.


26 – 28 August: Ride Across Wisconsin (RAW)
Dubuque to Kenosha, WI
Join special guest Jens Voigt for the second annual 175-mile ride across the greatest state ever! The ride begins in Dubuque and follows scenic, low traffic roads 175 miles across the bottom of the state, inlcudes a ceremonial lap around the Washington Park Velodrome and ends on at Simmons Island Beach along the shore of Lake Michigan in Kenosha. The 2015 inaugural ride was a huge success with 490 bib tags issued and only eight who needed sag support to finish the coast to coast ride. For the second year, there is a two-day option, with a stop over in Beloit. Registration will be capped at 1,500 this year.


28 August: Rock River Multisport Return to Cherry Valley 20k
Cherry Valley, IL

27 August: C-U Across the Prairie
Urbana, IL
Prairie Cycle Club’s Annual Cycling Extravaganza!


29 August: Bloomington Criterium
Bloomington, IL
For 2016, the Blooming Criterium will also be host to the 2016 Illinois Criterium State Championship.
