July 23rd, 2017 went down as a “W” in our book. Sadly, the day didn’t go to the Kingfish on the field, but everyone else who “played” that day was a winner.
The winners included everyone who pedaled with us up to Kenosha, the generous donors who contributed to World Bicycle Relief in the name of the 2017 Gran Fondo Hundo and the students and healthcare workers in Africa who have a chance at a brighter future thanks to all who devoted their time, training and dollars.
This year, our Hundo riders committed to contributing one Buffalo Bicycle at the time of registration. But many of our riders went above and beyond. Here are the totals from our 2017 event:
- 74 registered riders
- 38 riders actively campaigned for WBR
- 412 donors contributed to our WBR campaign
- $59,854 dollars raised for WBR*
- 407 Buffalo Bicycles*
* Due to WBR’s July campaign, many of the donations made in the name of our 2017 Gran Fondo Hundo riders will be matched dollar-for-dollar, meaning that in many cases, one Buffalo Bicycle “magically” equals two Buffalo Bicycles!
If you’re a fan of Public Radio, you’ll know that sometimes the significance of a campaign isn’t always measured in the dollar amount raised, but with the number of people contributing. 412 donors contributed to WBR on behalf of our 2017 Hundo riders, averaging five donors per rider (or 10 donors per active fundraiser).
But our riders aren’t average. The Higney family‘s campaigning caught the attention of 55 donors. The efforts of our top four fundraisers, including the Higneys, Brendan Sullivan and Ruth-Anne Renaud, brought it half of our total contributions. And our top fundraising team, Robin and Brian Pomeroy, managed to pull off a late-stage donation push to reach over $10,000 raised for WBR, meaning – you guessed it, folks – they are this year’s winners of the dream bike!
Congratutions, Robin and Brian! We’re delighted that Robin, after breaking her clavicle back in May, was cleared by her doctor in time to register for our 4th annual Hundo and that she and Brian made their way down from Wisconsin to join us for our ride back up north for the day. Robin, we hope you can rest easy, but we’re pretty sure you won’t be taking many days off from triathlon training from here on out.
This year we had added incentive for our fundraisers. For every Buffalo Bicycle donated in their name, our Hundo participants were entered into a raffle. The winners of the two raffle prizes are:

Congratulations to the prize winners and to each and everyone involved with our 4th annual Gran Fondo Hundo! Thank you to our Hundo riders, volunteers, donors, sponsors, motorcycle escorts and organizers. Every one of you has made a difference. Because of your efforts, more than 400 students and healthcare workers in Africa have a chance at a brighter future. Plus, you really made our day. Thank you.
